Diamond Head Crater had been extinct for 150,000 years, the
crater is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760-foot summit. Diamond
head was once occupied by military personnel using the crater as
a major defense fort, named Fort Ruger. Numerous cannons were located
within the crater, providing complete protection from invading
enemies. During 1910 an observation deck was constructed atop
the summit for target sighting. Built within the walls of the
crater was the command post a four level underground complex. A
580-foot tunnel was dug through the walls of the crater to
provide easy access to the Fort. Visitors can hike the
Diamond Head Trail 1 3/4 miles to the rim. Offering breathtaking
views of the entire west side of the island, from Waikiki to
Koki Head.

Things to do in Honolulu Hawaii
Surfing the North Shore of Oahu each winter
